Abstract

General medicine provides the fundamental framework for understanding, diagnosing, managing, and preventing a broad spectrum of diseases encountered in clinical practice. Effective medical care requires the integration of sound biomedical knowledge with systematic clinical methods, evidence-based decision-making, preventive strategies, and patient-centered communication. This chapter presents the core principles of general medicine, emphasizing comprehensive history taking, structured physical examination, clinical reasoning, formulation of differential diagnoses, appropriate selection and interpretation of investigations, and development of individualized management plans. Particular attention is given to evidence-based medicine (EBM), which integrates the best available scientific evidence with clinical expertise and patients’ values and preferences. The chapter also discusses the interpretation of medical literature, diagnostic accuracy, risk assessment, clinical guidelines, and shared decision-making as essential components of contemporary practice. Preventive healthcare is addressed through primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention, including health promotion, vaccination, screening, lifestyle modification, early disease detection, and prevention of complications. The growing burden of non-communicable diseases highlights the importance of identifying modifiable risk factors such as tobacco use, unhealthy diet, physical inactivity, obesity, hypertension, and harmful alcohol consumption. Ethical practice, effective communication, continuity of care, and multidisciplinary collaboration are also emphasized. By integrating clinical methods, scientific evidence, and preventive medicine, clinicians can deliver safe, rational, cost-effective, and holistic healthcare while improving individual and population health outcomes.
