Abstract
Gastrointestinal, hepatic, pancreatic, and nutritional disorders represent a diverse group of conditions that contribute substantially to morbidity, hospitalization, and mortality worldwide. This chapter provides a comprehensive overview of the clinical assessment, diagnosis, management, and prevention of common and important disorders of the gastrointestinal tract, liver, pancreas, and nutritional system, while emphasizing the timely recognition of gastrointestinal emergencies. Major gastroenterological conditions discussed include gastroesophageal reflux disease, peptic ulcer disease, gastrointestinal infections, inflammatory bowel disease, functional gastrointestinal disorders, malabsorption syndromes, and gastrointestinal malignancies. Hepatology encompasses acute and chronic hepatitis, metabolic and alcohol-associated liver disease, cirrhosis, portal hypertension, hepatic failure, and associated complications. Pancreatic disorders, particularly acute and chronic pancreatitis and pancreatic neoplasms, are addressed with emphasis on clinical presentation, biochemical evaluation, imaging, severity assessment, and multidisciplinary management.
The chapter also highlights the fundamental role of nutrition in health and disease, including assessment of nutritional status, malnutrition, obesity, micronutrient deficiencies, enteral and parenteral nutrition, and nutritional support in critically ill patients. Clinical gastrointestinal emergencies such as acute gastrointestinal bleeding, acute abdomen, intestinal obstruction, perforation, severe pancreatitis, acute liver failure, and related life-threatening complications require rapid assessment, stabilization, appropriate diagnostic investigations, and timely medical, endoscopic, interventional, or surgical treatment. Contemporary diagnostic modalities, including endoscopy, laboratory biomarkers, ultrasonography, computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, and specialized hepatobiliary investigations, are integrated throughout. An evidence-based, patient-centered, and multidisciplinary approach is essential for early diagnosis, effective treatment, prevention of complications, and improvement of long-term gastrointestinal and hepatopancreatic health outcomes.
