Abstract

Patient safety, risk management, infection prevention, and biomedical waste management are fundamental components of effective healthcare administration and quality patient care. Patient safety focuses on preventing avoidable harm through systematic identification of hazards, adverse-event reporting, medication safety, safe clinical practices, and development of a strong safety culture. Healthcare risk management involves identifying, assessing, prioritizing, and controlling clinical, operational, environmental, and organizational risks through proactive and evidence-based strategies. Infection prevention and control plays a critical role in reducing healthcare-associated infections through hand hygiene, standard and transmission-based precautions, sterilization and disinfection, surveillance, antimicrobial stewardship, and appropriate use of personal protective equipment. Biomedical waste management further contributes to occupational and environmental safety through proper segregation, collection, storage, transportation, treatment, and disposal of healthcare waste in accordance with applicable regulatory requirements. This chapter provides an integrated overview of patient-safety principles, risk assessment, infection-control practices, incident reporting, disaster preparedness, and biomedical waste management. Emphasis is placed on quality improvement, staff training, monitoring, documentation, regulatory compliance, and multidisciplinary approaches for creating safer and more sustainable healthcare organizations.
