Abstract

Respiratory diseases constitute a major global health burden and encompass a diverse spectrum of acute and chronic disorders affecting the airways, pulmonary parenchyma, pleura, pulmonary circulation, and respiratory system. This chapter provides a comprehensive overview of the clinical assessment, diagnosis, management, and prevention of major respiratory conditions, with particular emphasis on airway diseases, pulmonary infections, interstitial lung diseases, and critical respiratory care. Airway disorders, including asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and bronchiectasis, are discussed with reference to their pathophysiology, clinical presentation, pulmonary function testing, pharmacological management, and long-term disease control. Pulmonary infections are reviewed across community- and hospital-acquired pneumonia, tuberculosis, viral respiratory infections, and opportunistic infections, emphasizing appropriate microbiological evaluation, antimicrobial therapy, and infection-prevention strategies. Interstitial lung diseases are addressed through systematic clinical, radiological, physiological, and, where appropriate, pathological evaluation, including idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, hypersensitivity pneumonitis, occupational lung diseases, and connective tissue disease-associated interstitial lung involvement. The chapter further examines acute respiratory emergencies and critical care conditions such as acute respiratory failure and acute respiratory distress syndrome, incorporating oxygen therapy, non-invasive respiratory support, mechanical ventilation, and intensive monitoring. Diagnostic approaches involving chest imaging, arterial blood gas analysis, spirometry, bronchoscopy, and relevant laboratory investigations are integrated throughout. Preventive measures, including smoking cessation, vaccination, environmental and occupational risk reduction, pulmonary rehabilitation, and patient education, are also emphasized. An evidence-based and multidisciplinary approach to respiratory medicine facilitates early recognition, appropriate treatment, prevention of complications, and improvement in patients’ respiratory function, quality of life, and clinical outcomes.
