Abstract
Competency-based practical training is an essential component of biochemistry education, integrating theoretical knowledge with laboratory skills, clinical reasoning, professional communication, documentation, and problem-solving abilities. Contemporary practical assessment extends beyond the performance of individual experiments and emphasizes the learner’s ability to apply biochemical principles accurately, safely, and systematically in laboratory and clinical contexts. This chapter presents an integrated framework for competency-based practical exercises, clinical case interpretation, Objective Structured Practical Examination (OSPE), Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE), viva voce, laboratory record writing, and systematic troubleshooting.
Practical exercises are designed to develop competencies in specimen handling, reagent preparation, operation of laboratory instruments, performance of biochemical assays, calculation and interpretation of results, quality control, and laboratory safety. Clinical case-based activities emphasize the correlation of biochemical findings with common metabolic, hepatic, renal, endocrine, cardiovascular, and electrolyte disorders, thereby strengthening diagnostic reasoning and interpretation skills. OSPE and OSCE approaches are discussed as structured methods for objectively assessing procedural competence, analytical reasoning, communication, data interpretation, and professional behavior. Viva voce assessment is addressed as a complementary approach for evaluating conceptual understanding and the ability to explain laboratory principles and observations.
The chapter also outlines systematic laboratory record writing, including documentation of objectives, principles, requirements, procedures, observations, calculations, results, interpretations, precautions, and conclusions. Troubleshooting strategies are presented for common problems involving reagents, specimens, pipetting, calibration, instrumentation, procedural errors, quality-control failures, and unexpected analytical results. By integrating performance-based learning with structured assessment and reflective laboratory practice, this chapter supports the development of competent, responsible, and clinically oriented learners capable of applying practical biochemistry principles effectively in educational, diagnostic, and research settings.
