Abstract

Genetic counseling, prenatal diagnosis, and reproductive genetics are essential components of contemporary genomic medicine, supporting individuals and families in understanding genetic conditions, reproductive risks, and available diagnostic and therapeutic options. These disciplines integrate clinical genetics, molecular diagnostics, reproductive medicine, and ethical decision-making to facilitate informed healthcare choices before conception, during pregnancy, and throughout the reproductive lifespan. Advances in genomic technologies have significantly improved the detection of inherited disorders, chromosomal abnormalities, and fetal anomalies, enabling early diagnosis, individualized risk assessment, and evidence-based clinical management.

This chapter introduces the principles and practice of genetic counseling, emphasizing family history assessment, pedigree analysis, risk estimation, communication of genetic information, psychosocial support, and shared decision-making. It reviews the indications, methodologies, and clinical applications of prenatal screening and diagnostic techniques, including first- and second-trimester screening, ultrasonography, non-invasive prenatal testing (NIPT), chorionic villus sampling (CVS), amniocentesis, fetal chromosomal microarray analysis, and next-generation sequencing (NGS). The chapter also explores reproductive genetics, including carrier screening, preconception counseling, preimplantation genetic testing (PGT), assisted reproductive technologies (ART), recurrent pregnancy loss evaluation, infertility genetics, and the prevention of inherited disorders.

Ethical, legal, and social considerations—including informed consent, patient autonomy, confidentiality, incidental findings, reproductive decision-making, and equitable access to genetic services—are discussed as integral aspects of responsible clinical practice. Emerging developments such as expanded carrier screening, genome sequencing in prenatal care, polygenic risk assessment, gene-editing technologies, and artificial intelligence-assisted genetic interpretation are also highlighted for their potential to enhance reproductive healthcare.

A comprehensive understanding of genetic counseling, prenatal diagnosis, and reproductive genetics enables healthcare professionals, genetic counselors, obstetricians, reproductive specialists, and researchers to provide accurate risk assessment, compassionate counseling, and personalized reproductive care. As precision medicine continues to advance, these disciplines play an increasingly important role in improving maternal and fetal health, preventing genetic diseases, and supporting informed reproductive choices for individuals and families.
